Pica | T277

PicaFemale, Young, Large

When Pica arrived at the ScPA she was absolutely terrified. She hid in her box and occasionally put her nose out to see what was happening and to bark at anyone who approached. Yes, all the classic signs of a dog who has been beaten. A couple of months of love and she was a changed dog. Pica is a delight. Full of fun and affection, she now seeks out human contact and loves her walks and cuddles. We think she is some kind of levrier cross, she has the right build, although there is definitely something else in the mix. Pica was born in June 2016, and although her life up to now has probably been very tough, she is now firmly on the road to a far brighter future.

Jaja | T320

JajaFemale, Young, Medium

Jaja is a young fox terrier cross who was brought to the SCPA by her owner who was not able to look after her dog due to health reasons. Jaja is quite a timid and delicate looking dog, so at first she found life at the refuge a bit overwhelming. However once she started sharing her kennel she started settling in well. We suspect that she has some podenco or other similar breed in her, as she has very large erect ears, which makes her look simply adorable. Jaja would love to find a new home soon. As a small-ish female she should have no trouble, especially as despite her breed, hunting is very far from her mind. Cuddles are more her thing!

Pochontas | T319

Pocahontas female shepherd crossFemale, Young, Medium

One of several lovely young females who arrived at around the same time in June 2017, Pocahontas is a delight. She is pale brown and white in colour, really stunning. She was born in June 2017, and so is naturally lively and full of fun. We have no idea of her history, but she shows no sign at all of having been mistreated; she loves everyone and seems to be fine with other dogs. Pocahontas is of medium size and would fit into just about any home where she can have love, exercise and cuddles.

Mimi | T318

Mimi female shepherd crossFemale, Young, Medium

Mimi is most definitely a DRC hot pick. She is an adorable black shepherd cross who was born in June 2017, so was just a year old when she arrived at the refuge. She has wonderful body language, is really wiggly and affectionate. She seems to have either very good manners or some training, as she sits well and relatively calmly for such a young, active dog. She has a very engaging face and will stay medium sized and is fine with other dogs. We can find out how she behaves with cats, of course. Mimi is vaccinated, sterilised and identified by microchip and her adoption fee is €170

Tikia | T224

Tikia female crossFemale, Young, Medium

It might strike you when you see the photo of Tikia that she has a lot of staffie in her. Yes, you are right. However luckily for her she does not fall within the measurements which would make her a “dangerous dog”. So anyone can adopt this lovely girl, without any special permits or paperwork. Phew! Tikia arrived already identified, but her owner’s details were not up to date and so far no one has come to reclaim her. Tikia was born in March 2013 and although she is okay with some dogs and can mix with them on walks etc, she would probably be better off as an only dog.

Cally | T173

CallyFemale, Young, Large

Cally was adopted from the SPA in January and we thought all was going fine. Apparently not, and once again it is not the fault of the dog. Yes, people’s circumstances change, but if you know that a big change is imminent, it is preferable to wait before adopting a new dog. In this case, the new owner moved in with someone and Cally did not get on with their (female) dog. So Cally is back at the SPA. She is a very attractive girl, young (born in January 2014) and is fine with male dogs. She is quite a chunky lass, as we say, and is suitably boisterous in her play. Attention must be paid with very young children, but apart from that, Cally is perfect. She is not too bad on a lead and would appeal to people who like the staffie types but don’t want to go through all the administrative steps to own a (a-hem) dangerous dog.

Lana | T099

Lana young female labrador crossFemale, Young, Medium

Lana has been at the SPA before, she was found as a stray last year and brought in, although she was recognised on Facebook but never collected. Her first home did not work out, as the owner lived in an apartment and worked long hours; in fact it is hard to see why he thought having a dog was a good idea. So it is not really Lana’s fault that she is back; she is just a typical young dog; eager to please, eager to learn and with some basic education. Lana looks like a small and slightly built labrador, she was born in December 2016 and is great on the lead, as well as being fine with other dogs and children.

Helda | R545

Helda female German ShepherdFemale, Young, Large

Helda is a purebreed Germand shepherd who was bought at a local pet store five years ago. Having a purebreed puppy was important enough at the time for this family to spend considerable money on a dog, but Helda has ended up neglected at the bottom of a garden. Unsurprisingly she barks for attention, and it is for this reason that she has been abandoned at the SPA. Helda is five years old (born 31.07.12) but already has a cataract in one eye. Poor girl. She is fine with certain male dogs but not cats, and at the moment she is scared and timid. She is a fabulous girl though, and has had a miserable life up to now.

Indian| PP562

Indian female Czech Wolf DogFemale, Large, Mature

Indian is the second of the Czech wolfdogs at the SPA. She came from a man who rescues this breed but who had become overwhelmed with numbers, and the SPA stepped in to help. Indian is the mate of Artos, and would prefer to be homed with him and without other dogs if possible. She is about the size of a German shepherd, and timid with people who she does not know. Once she knows someone she will happily lick and nuzzle them, and shows lots of affection. She is not good with dogs other than Artos and cannot be homed with children. Indian was born in September 2013.

  • Timid with people not good with children
  • Mate of Artos or homed alone
  • Magnificent looking dog

Aneth|PP122

AnethFemale, Mature, Medium

Aneth is a complicated dog and will be difficult to home, but that does not mean we should not try! Aneth is an anglo cross who has leischmaniasis, however it is well under control and she takes a tablet a day to keep the disease stabilised. That is not the major issue. This illness is usually enough to put people off, however despite this, Aneth has been adopted and brought back on two separate occasions for being a runner. And not just your average runner, either. Aneth will need a super-enclosed garden if she is to stay in one place. And she disappears on walks, too, so lead only for her. Not everyone’s ideal dog. However she is so adorable and affectionate that perhaps someone would be willing to give her a home. Aneth adores being outside, so if someone has an outside area in a well enclosed garden where she can sleep but have lots of cuddles too, that would probably be ideal. She was born in December 2009 and so although not the youngest of dogs, she is certainly one of the most active!
