Jet|R128

Jet young male labradorMale, Young, Large

Jet looks to be a golden labrador, although perhaps his ears are ever so slightly too long to be a pure bred. He arrived towards the end of March, and we have no idea where he came from , nor why his owners have not come to collect him. It almost goes without saying that he arrived unidentified. The vet estimates his date of birth as being July 2016, so maybe he has outgrown the family’s expectations of size. Jet is just a normal size for a labrador, however! He is a stunning lad who will leave the SPA castrated, identified and vaccinated for just €170. Why not come along and meet him?

Iktus|R120

Iktus young male douge argentineMale, Young, Large

Part of me wants Iktus to find a home, and part of me doesn’t. He has been brought to the SPA as his owner had gone away (no, not prison) for two years, and he has not been able to find anyone to look after his dog. Obviously paying kennelling fees for that length of time is not an option, and so he had no option other than to bring Iktus to the SPA. If Iktus has not been homed when he returns, then he will most definitely reclaim his dog. And there were many tears shed. Do we deliberately keep a dog for two years, or do we try and rehome him? In any case, Iktus would like more exercise than he gets at the SPA, and we have to think of the well-being of the dog. Iktus is a Dogue Argentin cross who is very big and very solid. He was born in October 2013 and is used to walking without a lead for up to three hours a day. At the SPA we will have to get him used to walking on a lead without pulling, and will do everything we can to make his stay easier, either until he finds a home or his owner returns. Iktus needs a home without other animals.

Kalou|R074

KalouMale, Young, Medium

Kalou arrived at the SPA the first time when he was just out of puppyhood as a mistreatment case and was adopted shortly afterwards. Sadly this adoption did not work out, and Kalou is back at the SPA. As with every failed adoption, we know much more about the dog than we did before. We now know that Kalou is not good with cats, and never will be, no matter how hard an owner may try to change his behaviour. However we also know that he is fine with female dogs and is very affectionate with humans. Since he has been back at the SPA, Kalou has proved to be fine on the lead and he is sharing his kennel with a female dog whom he adores. And he is such a handsome boy that we hope he will not have too long to wait before finding his new CAT FREE home. Kalou is a fine-boned long haired black shepherd who was born in December 2014.

Pascoe|R080

PascoeMale, Young, Medium

Pascoe was found in a nearby village, in fact statistically it is the village that brings proportionately more dogs than any other, Limoux. In this case it appears that someone has moved house and accidentally forgotten their dogs. Because Pascoe arrived the same time as Leo, and the first thing Leo did was fall ill with parvovirus, so we know that the dogs were not vaccinated. Pascoe was born in January 2012 and is a grey and black griffon cross. Clearly he is okay with male dogs, and is a lovely lad who is shocked to find himself at the refuge. This is a breed that really appeals to Brits, so let’s try and find a home for lovely Pascoe.

Fadista|R65

Fadista male large shepherd crossMale, Young, Large

Again, it was sad to see Fadista back at the SPA. He was adopted recently after arriving last summer weighing in at less than half of his normal body weight. The SPA brought him back to health and he is a magnificent beast. The problem with this being that lots of people are scared of dogs of this size, and such was the case with the people in the village where his adopter lives. So in the interest of neighbourly relations, Fadista is back. He is a huge-headed cross breed (no permits required) who was born in August 2014. He is fine with other dogs and often has the run of the SPA when the gates are closed in the mornings. Everyone’s favourite gentle giant!

Tyson|R64

Tyson large white male shepherd crossMale, Young, Large

It is very sad to see Tyson back at the SPA. He was abandoned on February 8th, which by coincidence is exactly one year to the day since he was brought in last time. Tyson was adopted in July and the couple who took him were just not right for him. I would say he was not right for them, but that implies he was at fault, whereas this is more a case of young people taking bad advice. What kind of behaviourist tells an owner that the dog is “insane” and will never be happy inside a house? In any case, Tyson deserves better, so we will do better at finding him the right home next time. He is a big white shepherd who was born in February 2012. He is fabulous on the lead and is a total pleasure to walk. Although he shares his kennel at the SPA he tends to be a bit more exclusive out of the SPA, so perhaps he would be happier as an only dog.

Pollux|R60

Pollux male griffon crossMale, Young, Medium

Pollux spent the first year of his life attached on a very short chain. Until his owners moved house, leaving him behind, still attached to the chain! Luckily a neighbour spotted him and brought him to the SPA. So life is already tons better for this gentle griffon cross. But it will be even better still once he has a real home! Pollux was born in January 2016, so is a very young dog. Plenty of time ahead of him to forget his rough start, and to be honest although he has not had a nice life, he is nowhere near as timid as some of our griffons. This boy will be just fine!

Engy|R57

Engy female Brittany SpanielFemale, Young, Medium

Engy arrived at the SPA when her elderly owner went into long term care. As usual there were no family members to take the dog, but on this occasions perhaps because the dog arrived with hefty vets bills. Luckily enough the SPA is there to pick up the pieces. No, they did not make a contribution to the refuge, but such is the state of this sad world we live in. Engy has now been treated for her infection and has made a full recovery. She is a brittany spaniel who was born in May 2009 and who is fine with other dogs. She is used to a lot of love, so is having to adapt to life in a kennel, but we are trying to give her as many cuddles as we can.

Liquorice|R50

Liquorice young maleMale, Young, Medium

Liquorice was adopted immediately after his pound time ended so when he left we had not really got to know him very well. He has now been brought back as not being good with cats. He was tested when he was at the SPA, but at the time he was catatonic with fear, so did not react. We are not sure what happened in his new home, but the couple felt that the cat was in danger. Better safe than sorry! We are now working at the SPA with this lad, trying to increase his confidence. So for now he is one to watch, or maybe one for patient and experienced owners. Liquorice was born in January 2014 and is a very chunky black lab cross.

Calimero|R43

Camilero lemon setter maleMale, Young, Medium

As sometimes happens to our dogs before they arrive at the SPA, Calimero spent some time with a family. This is how we know that he is fine with dogs of both sexes, cats, children and (wait for it) parrots! Well, you never know! In any case, Calimero is a very sweet boy, a lemon setter cross whose date of birth is estimated as January 2013. He arrived very thin, and is definitely not a greedy boy, deferring to the dog with whom he shares his kennel. He is very gentle on the lead, not at all timid, just a bit worn down by the life that he has had so far. Soon all of that will be behind him, quicker still once he is in a new home!
